Chapter Ten

The portal Jezzy had come through was located at the airport, which meant they had to drive to get there. And since Drek wasn’t about to show his back to the Jorögumo, he made Rissa drive while he sat in the back seat and kept an eye on Jezzy.

It was a harrowing experience because although Clarissa didn’t drive with the abandon he did, she also didn’t drive with the speed, and holy criminy, it took forever to get from Corktown to Detroit Metro Airport.

Jezzy, for the record, did not have a lot of patience; she’d lifted her hand several times, clearly itching to slice one of them in half.

“Twenty minutes, Drek,” Rissa snapped when he noted that she drove like a grandma. “Twenty whole freaking minutes.”

Damn, was she ever on edge.

Airports, unlike bars and laundromats, were twenty-four-hour facilities, so they had to act cool because, no matter what, there were humans around.

Which was a struggle with Jezzy, who was pretty obviously not human. Luckily, it didn’t take a whole lot of magic to glamour humans into believing what Drek wanted them to, and they were able to pass through the security checkpoints without issue.

“Okay, where to?” he asked once they were inside the MacNamara terminal.

Jezzy led them to a Taco Bell with the metal gate pulled down and secured over the entrance.

“Yep. These portals are in the strangest places. Okay, come on.” He used his magic to lift the gate high enough that they could all three slip inside, then he let it drop again and followed Jezzy to a row of wooden highchairs stacked against the wall.

He stood in front of a small space between the high chairs and the soda machine and trailed his fingers through the air, like he had at the laundromat, until he hit that telltale sign indicating that yes, the portal was still slightly open.

“Here we go,” he said, turning to Jezzy and smiling. She was scary as fuck, but the demon had been a significant part of his childhood, so, yeah, he was happy he could accommodate her and send her back to Hell.

Of course, all that really meant was that she’d be ready to torment him again as soon as he was able to follow.

“Just walk toward this area, and the portal should swallow you and send you home.”

Jezzy stepped forward but hesitated. “This won’t work.”

“Sure it will. We sent back an incubus a little over an hour ago.”

Jezzy shook her head. “Your plan won’t work. The only way you can defeat him is by coming to him. He knows this. That’s why he keeps sending us to distract you.”

It was the most Jezzy had ever said at one time in his presence. Heck, it was more than she’d said to him altogether in his entire lifetime.

“Shit,” he said, shoulders slumping.

“See you soon,” she replied, and then she stepped into the magic left over by the portal and, as expected, disappeared.

He’d known, of course, that what she said was true. He just hadn’t wanted to believe it.
